St. Louis Scott Gallagher 2018 Preseason Tournament Recap
Posted by: Jordan Collins | Director of Marketing and Communications
On March 3rd and 4th, 2018, Rapids Youth Soccer sent teams to the St. Louis Scott Gallagher ECNL Friendlies. Girls and boys played elite teams from around the country throughout the weekend. The tournament’s objective was to expand our teams’ understandings of competition across the country. The tournament did not disappoint with quality soccer and facilities being provided by the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. When the players weren’t on the pitch they were exploring St. Louis with parents and chaperones and attending their first Rapids Culture Night. These nights consist of speeches and team building activities building unity and a shared vision for players and coaches.
The interactive culture piece centered around a core values presentation given by coaches. Parents also met from multiple age groups to get to know one another and connect over the sport and players that have brought them all together. The friendly matches were a great way for players to have an immediate application of the culture pieces taught in the core values presentation. Players would mention these concepts in team talks throughout the trip and coaches were pleased to see their teams using the club’s core values to their collective advantage.
The Rapid’s girls program fielded 3 teams in St. Louis coached by 13U-14U Director of Coaching Daniel Nestor. Daniel was extremely pleased with the girls’ willingness to learn and how they used the club’s core values throughout the weekend to support their fellow teammates. The teams fought all weekend and grew as a unit despite adversity and a very competitive set of opponents. Under increased pressure, the girls kept their cool and played “The Rapids Way.” Players and coaches walked away knowing they have great potential to play at the elite level consistently if they continue to push themselves as individuals and as a group. The club would like to send out a special thank you to the volunteers and parents who secured a meeting place for the Rapids Culture Night. Rapids Coaches really appreciated all of your hard work and preparation to make it a special weekend for every player.
The Rapid’s boys program also fielded 3 teams in St. Louis coached by 9U-10U Select Director Antti Ronkanen. Antti and his staff were very impressed by the quality of the facilities and Scott Gallagher organization. The boys teams learned a lot over the course of the weekend with each team playing opponents that were more comfortable with possession. Each team was pushed to be more organized defensively as individuals, positional groupings, and as a full team. Coaches were pleased with the offensive creation of chances throughout the weekend with the boys all winning games over the weekend schedule. The 07A & 07B boys walked away with 2 wins and a draw while the 08 boys finished the weekend strong with a win.
