What is the CRYSC Next Wave Initiative?

At Colorado Rapids Youth Soccer Club, we wholeheartedly embrace the transformative impact of sports and recognize that introducing today’s youth to women in leadership roles within sport is essential for cultivating a future that is both inclusive and equitable.

Next Wave is dedicated to engaging the “next wave” of women and their allies, providing them with an environment that encourages, supports, educates, and develops. At CRYSC we aim to be a destination youth soccer club that never stops trying to create remarkable experiences for players, coaches, and staff. Therefore, we challenge ourselves to go beyond industry standards and become a beacon for women’s empowerment in the game.

At our core, Next Wave is tailored to bridge the gap while growing and empowering the number of female coaches within our club; however, we strongly believe in the strength of our entire soccer community. Positive change, we recognize, does not occur in isolation; it takes collaboration, intentionality, and commitment of all involved.

How do I engage with Next Wave?

NEXT WAVE IS FOR ALL OF US!

Whether you are a man or woman, a player or parent, a Board Member or volunteer coach, are you ready to be part of the movement that reshapes the narrative within our soccer community?

Currently, there are two main ways to engage with Next Wave:

Engage with Next Wave and embark on a journey of empowerment, education, and excellence. Together, we will create a legacy that inspires the next generation of coaches, leaders and players.

The “Why” behind Next Wave?

BRIDGING THE GAP

A study published in the Gender & Society Journal, covering 1999 to 2010, revealed 13.4% representation of women among coaches in the American Youth Soccer Association. Fast forward to 2019, according to The Aspen Institute’s report, there was a positive shift, with the representation of women in coaching and leadership roles within U.S. youth sports increasing to 27%. It’s worth noting that one study focused specifically on soccer coaches, while the other encompassed all sports.

Despite substantial growth in female player participation post Title 9, there is a persistently low representation of women in coaching and leadership roles within sport. This gap is recorded to prevail across all levels of sports, including youth sports (LaVoi, 2009, 2014; The Aspen Institute, 2019a; Gosai et al., 2022; Norman, 2016; Norman & Simpson, 2022; Schull, 2017).

CRYSC remains steadfast in its commitment to challenging these norms, fostering a more inclusive future, and actively working to bridge the gap in coaching and leadership roles.
